About Matariki 2026
Matariki is the Māori New Year - one of New Zealand's most significant cultural observances and, since 2022, an official public holiday. In 2026 it falls on Friday, July 10. The celebration is centred on the rising of the Matariki star cluster (the Pleiades) in the mid-winter sky, signalling the start of the new year in the Māori lunar calendar.
Matariki is a time for three things: remembering those who have passed since the last rising of Matariki, celebrating the present with family (whānau) and community, and looking ahead to the future with hope and intention. Traditional observances include stargazing to identify the cluster, preparing feasts (hākari), earth oven cooking (umu), and community gatherings.
