About ANZAC Day 2026
ANZAC Day (April 25) is one of New Zealand's most significant national observances. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War at Gallipoli. Today, it is a time to honor all New Zealanders who have served and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
In Kerikeri and the wider Bay of Islands, the community comes together for moving Dawn Services and Civic Services. It is a solemn and respectful occasion where locals and visitors alike pay their respects to the fallen.
Service Times & Details (To be Confirmed):
- Date: Saturday, April 25, 2026
- Location: Kerikeri Domain
- Dawn Service: 5:45am — muster at 5:40am in the carpark next to the Fire Station
- Civic Service: 9:45am — muster at the Cobham Road gate
- Both services commence with Veterans and Colours being piped on
- Distance from Kerigold Chalets: Just minutes away — very easy to attend the early Dawn Service
- Other Services: Russell, Paihia, and Waitangi also hold ANZAC services
The Dawn Service is one of the most moving experiences on the ANZAC Day calendar, beginning before sunrise at the Kerikeri Domain. The ceremony includes the sounding of the Last Post, a minute of silence, and the Reveille, with Veterans and Colours piped on to open both services. Following the morning's commemorations, the community often gathers for a traditional 'gunfire breakfast'.
Wearing Medals on ANZAC Day:
- Veterans: Wear your medals on the left breast — get those medals out and give them a polish!
- Family members: Wear family medals on the right breast — a fitting way to acknowledge and preserve the memory of the recipients.
- In the parade: Please muster at 5:40am in the carpark next to the Fire Station.
- Poppy Appeal: In the days leading up to ANZAC Day, the RSA's Poppy Appeal raises funds for veterans' welfare.
- Community Spirit: A respectful atmosphere of remembrance and gratitude shared by locals and visitors alike.
