Flights to Kerikeri: Auckland to Bay of Islands Flight Guide

Airlines, booking tips and an honest local answer to the fly-or-drive question

Flights to Kerikeri from Auckland take about 45 minutes. Air New Zealand flies the route 3-4 times a day, and Barrier Air operates around 22 flights a week, so there are options morning to evening most days. Kerikeri Airport (KKE) is the gateway to the Bay of Islands - just 6 km from town and about 15 minutes from Paihia. We're Kerigold Chalets, a 5-minute drive from the runway, and we've welcomed a lot of fly-in guests over the years - so here's the guide we wish every visitor read before booking, including the honest answer to the fly-or-drive question.

Who Flies to Kerikeri

Two airlines serve Kerikeri from Auckland:

Both use smaller regional aircraft - it's a turboprop hop, not a jet - and that shapes the experience in mostly good ways: quick boarding, low fuss, and views of the Northland coastline on a clear day. Two things to know: there are fewer flights in winter, and the aircraft are small enough that popular services genuinely sell out.

Landing at Kerikeri: What It's Actually Like

Kerikeri Airport is genuinely a pleasure to use. It's small and efficient - there's only one flight on the ground at a time, so there's no confusion, and your bags are right there almost as soon as you are. Parking is simple, pick-ups are easy, and you're in Kerikeri town about 5 minutes after leaving the car park. Compare that with the hour you'd budget getting out of Auckland Airport and it explains a lot about why locals love this little airport.

Fly or Drive? An Honest Local Answer

Here's the thing a flights page written by anyone else won't tell you: door to door, it's really marginal. Flying is quicker in the air, but by the time you've got to Auckland Airport, waited for your flight, flown, and then sorted a car at the Kerikeri end, the total time saved over driving is often small - especially depending on how far you live from the airport.

And the drive keeps getting better. With the new expressway and its extensions pushing north, the Auckland-Kerikeri drive is getting shorter and shorter. In the car you're on your own schedule, you can stop where you like, and you carry no risk of a fog-cancelled flight upending your plans.

Our Straight Recommendation

If it's a business day-trip and every hour counts, fly. For most holiday visitors, we honestly recommend driving - it can be a lovely trip with some great stops (below), you arrive with your own car in a town without Uber, and your schedule belongs to you.

Driving Up? The Stops Worth Making

If you take our advice and drive, these are the leg-stretches we actually recommend to guests heading north from Auckland:

Arriving on the Last Flight (or Late by Road)

Landing at dusk or rolling in late? Kerigold has straightforward self check-in and late check-in options. You'll be sent a map so you can go straight to your chalet, or we can arrange for our manager to meet you and walk you over. Regulars just head straight to their usual chalet - it's set up and waiting. And in winter we'll even turn the heat pump and lights on before you arrive, so you walk into a warm, cosy chalet instead of a cold, dark one.
